Introduction

(In the photograph at the beginning I am the one in the white Hudson Bay Blanket Coat).

I am a world travelled, retired high school teacher. As well as having taught in Britain and Canada I have taught in international schools in Turkey. My travels have afforded me many unusual situations that required careful handling, ergo, I’m not easily fazed by a situation. I am hardworking and not afraid of a challenge. I am a widow of over twenty years with three grown children and four grandchildren. I enjoy meeting new people and new experiences. I speak French and English fluently and passable Turkish. I am physically fit. I walked half of the route in the Istanbul Marathon three years running, I cross-country ski and I swim at the “Y” three times a week. I believe in living a healthy life. When I am at home I take courses at McGill University’s Life Long Learning Center, I play bridge and I volunteer at a center for new immigrants.

I asked my friend and one of my neighbours what they would say about me if someone asked them. My neighbour described me as energetic, kind, fun to be with and interesting to talk to. My close friend, said that what she liked best about having me as her friend was that I was kind, dependable, she could tell me anything and that she was never bored in my company. Like most people I find it difficult to talk about myself and when I mentioned this to my son, he told me to say that my children and grandchildren not only loved me, but liked me and liked being in my company.

Why we want to house sit

Although I do not have a pet myself (I live in a condominium complex and working overseas made owning a pet difficult), I love animals, especially cats and dogs. I dog sit regularly for my son and I am the ‘go to’ person when friends want their pets looked after. My son and his family have a lovely dog, Duke. Duke is a cross between a Newfoundland Dog and a Great Dane. He is sharp as a tack and craftier than a fox! They have two cats also, Cleo and Coco. These two cats suit their names to a tee.  Cleo is a hunter and proud of it. Coco is a coquette and a bit if a princess. I believe animals all have very distinct characters and have taught me a great deal. I seriously believe that you should treat an animal with the same respect you would afford and friend.

Previous House Sitting Experience

For the past three years I have been house sitting once a year for a couple who have a flat in Istanbul. They prefer me to look after their place because I am trustworthy, I take good care of their flat and I use my initiative when things need attending to. This in turn affords me the opportunity to return to a place I love very much and visit old friends. As well as looking after their property I attend to one unusual task. People in Turkey do not tend to have pets in their houses. This couple feed the cats along the part of the Bosphorus where they live and its my job to do the same when I am there. I actually get quite a kick out of this. Animal life expectancy is not long in Istanbul ergo, its not the same animals I see each year when I go, but it doesn't take them long to get to know me and come running when they see me. (I am also available almost any time).
